FPTCT Team Professional Biographies
Project Lead: Carolyn Cohen has worked in
the field of English as a Second Language for more than twenty
years in senior program administration, language teaching, assessment,
teacher and assessor training, assessment development and program
evaluation. She has worked in an advisory role for the Ontario Region
LINC Advisory Committee (ORLAC) Coordinated Language Assessment and
Referral Committee (CLARS) and as Public Relations Chair for TESL
Ontario.
Research Lead: Antonella Valeo has
several years experience as an ESL teacher, language program
administrator and teacher trainer in the University of Toronto TESOL program. Antonella is the current Chair of the Research Committee for TESL Ontario. She has a Ph.D. in Second Language Education from OISE/University of Toronto and a CTESL from Woodsworth College,
University of Toronto.
Research Consultant: Sheila Dermer Applebaum
established her primary career at the Toronto District School Board with major sector responsibility for ESL, Native Languages and English in the Workplace. She was involved as an administrator, instructor, teacher trainer and materials developer. She holds a doctorate from OISE/ University of Toronto in Curriculum,
Teaching and Learning.
Research Consultant: Colette Peters' experience
working with newcomers to Canada spans over a decade, with areas of
specialization that include English for Academic Purposes, and Enhanced
Language Training. She has also worked in bridging programs for
teachers, pharmacists, and doctors. Her PhD research examines the
experiences of internationally educated doctors as they seek licensure
in Ontario. Colette is a PhD candidate in Curriculum, Teaching and
Learning in the Second Language Education program at OISE/University of
Toronto.
Research Consultant: Anouchka Plumb has
extensive experience teaching English for Academic Purpose at the University of Windsor. She is currently a Doctoral student in Education. Anouchka is professional member of TESL Ontario as well as the Ontario College of Teachers.
Administrative Assistant: Elizabeth Carbone has
several years of experience teaching English to adults in Toronto and abroad. She currently holds a TESL Ontario Certificate and a Masters in TESOL.
System Administrator: Kevin O'Brien had extensive
teaching experience in elementary, secondary, LINC, ESL and Literacy.
He has been a CALL instructor and presenter since the 1980's and he has
been teaching the use of CALL to teachers for as many years.
