TESL Exchange Series

The TESL Exchange series was created to highlight the fantastic ELT Professionals in our community. In a short 5 to 15 minute-long video, presenters share a skill, activity, application, or any other topic they believe will be of use to others in the field. The concept of this series is to replicate the exchange of ideas that often happens in a vibrant community of practice. These “how-to” videos are meant to be inspiring first-steps for ELT Professionals to explore and experiment.

Format: After being introduced by a moderator, presenters deliver a detailed presentation about a very specific area or topic. They very clearly explain how to go about something in particular such as how to use an application, how to do a classroom activity, or how to organize important documents. The video usually has a practical example which allows for the viewer to see or try this new skill out themselves.

One new TESL Exchange video will be released each month.

TESL Perspectives Video Series

TESL Perspectives Video Series are produced and created by our innovative volunteers. In each video, a team member explores a topic from their individual point-of-view. The result is a uniquely authentic piece of work that intimately reflects the imaginings of a TESL Ontario member and volunteer. These relatable pieces are then put on YouTube for all to enjoy and reflect on.

Format: TESL Perspective videos can take the form of website or textbook reviews, informal discussions, interviews, or informational videos. Any topic that is relevant to ELT professionals can be explored in a myriad of ways in this video series.

Still life selfies are a fun and versatile way of self-representation and connection through objects that can be used with a wide range of language proficiency levels and as a springboard for future lessons. They allow students to draw on their funds of knowledge to: a) introduce themselves and get to know each other; b) discuss topics of interest to them; and c) dig deeper into a given topic by drawing on their lifeworlds through the use of familiar objects. TESL Perspectives: Still Life Selfie

As educators, we have our go-to activities to teach grammar points. Many times, students are unable to see the real-world connection to these concepts. TESL Perspectives: Student Approved ESL Teaching Activities

Whether it be of a case of time constraints in a jam-packed curriculum or a teacher’s lack of familiarity with the concept, pronunciation is a skill that is most-often forgotten about in the ESL classroom. TESL Perspectives: The Struggles of Teaching Pronunciation

As educators in the field of TESL, we have probably come into contact with hundreds, if not thousands, of unique students from around the globe. While we may keep in contact with some of our former students long after they leave our classroom via email or social media, we often do not see the lasting impacts that we left on them. Moving abroad to study in Canada taught these students more than English.

In this video, I speak to Jorge Salinas, a former student in my ESL classroom. Since then, he has earned his Bachelors in Language Teaching and has taken what he learned from his experience abroad, applying it into his own teaching practice in Mexico. It was wonderful to catch up with him, and see to what extent the role I had in shaping his future. Hopefully, you find this video to be inspiring and that it encourages you to keep in touch with some of your former students.
