Teaching and Researching Mental Health in EAP Classes

In this webinar, we will share how an EAP program is innovating to support students with mental health struggles.

It is not unusual to encounter students struggling with mental health issues in EAP classrooms. Impacts may vary from poor academic performance to risks to their health, well-being, and, ultimately, their survival. We will share how Fanshawe’s EAP program is addressing mental health issues and our research project investigating students’ awareness of, dispositions, and attitudes toward mental health.

About the Presenters

Corinne Marshall (she/her) has been teaching EAP for most of her career; she also has a background in corporate training as well as secondary and postsecondary English and Communications. She has been with Fanshawe College since 2004, coordinating Fanshawe’s EAP program from 2009 to 2018. Academic projects at Fanshawe have included aligning EAP learning outcomes with the language requirements of college and university programs receiving Fanshawe EAP graduates.

Dr. Danielle Freitas (she/her) is the Associate Dean of the English Language Institute at Fanshawe College. She is currently doing her post-doctoral program in Leadership and Organization Strategy at Walden University and holds a PhD in Language and Literacies Education from the University of Toronto, a master’s degree in Second Language Education from the University of Toronto as well as a master’s degree in TESOL from the University College London. She has been involved academically and professionally in English language teaching for over 17 years and has studied and worked in Brazil, England, USA, and Canada.

Dr. Tanaz Javan (she/her) is a faculty member at the School of Language and Liberal Studies at Fanshawe College, where she teaches psychology and wellness courses. She has a PhD in Health Information Science, and as a researcher, she works on the implementation and integration of trauma and violence-informed principles into community-based services. She is a broad member of the Gender Equality Coalition of Ontario, a member of the Gender, Trauma & Violence Knowledge Incubator and the Centre for Research & Education on Violence Against Women & Children at Western University.
