Classroom Accommodations for Older Adults

As an in-class learner: How does feeling welcomed impact your participation? How does peer engagement impact your participation? How does age change your participation?

Classroom accommodations for older adults looks at suggestions and best practices instructors can try in the classroom to support their older adult learners. These suggestions are based on in-class experience from Immigrant Services of Nova Scotia (ISANS) 55+ literacy class, along with best practices from settlement providers and community organizations.

Learning objectives for this webinar include:

  • Sharing older adult learner experiences, suggestions, and best practices,
  • Discussing classroom accommodations from different sensory perspectives, and
  • Discussing a classroom accommodation handout.

About the Presenter

Julie MacDonald (she/her) has worked with newcomers to Canada since 2013. She works at Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia in Language Services as a literacy team lead, PBLA lead, and instructor. At ISANS, she uses her knowledge and experience to support vulnerable clients, including older adult learners.
