HyFlex LINC Literacy: Challenges and Successes

This presentation will explore client-centered, innovative strategies, challenges, successes, best practices, and online platforms for teaching literacy learners in virtual/HyFlex settings. These approaches help students develop language skills through engaging content, fostering more meaningful and confident learning experiences. In addition, the session will highlight the digital navigator role.

  • Learn about hands-on techniques on how to identify the unique learning needs of low-literacy clients to support their success in online environments.

About the Presenters

Javeria (she/her) is an experienced English language educator with over a decade of teaching in EAP, ESL, and general English across in-person and online settings. She joined Caledon Community Services as a LINC instructor in 2025 and is passionate about integrating technology to create engaging learning environments. Javeria holds a master’s degree in applied linguistics and is an Ontario Certified English Language Teacher (OCELT).

Rowan (he/him) is an experienced TESL professional with nearly two decades in the field, including two-plus years as a LINC Literacy instructor with Caledon Community Services. An Ontario Certified English Language Teacher with a background in journalism and a Master of Education, he specializes in accessible, engaging virtual and HyFlex instruction. Since transitioning from journalism to teaching in 2008, he has worked with learners of all ages and proficiency levels across online, in person, and hybrid settings.
