Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee Webinar Series

What do we actually do when tension arises? For example:

  • A student says something that shifts the room… and all eyes turn to you. What do you say next?
  • Do we shut it down, move on, or stay with the discomfort?
  • What language do our learners actually have when disagreement becomes real?

PARSNIP topics don’t stay outside the classroom, they show up, in real and unexpected ways.

You asked for PARSNIP 2, here it is.
More practical. More real. More powerful.

This session moves beyond theory and into the messy, unscripted moments of teaching, when tension, identity, and language collide. Through authentic classroom scenarios, participants will explore what it means to respond in the moment, not perfectly, but intentionally.

At the heart of this session is a shift: from avoiding conflict to working with it.
Participants will engage with practical strategies, language exponents, and ready-to-use materials that support learners to disagree, set boundaries, express discomfort, and repair communication, without losing the learning, or each other.
Come ready to do the work, and leave with ready-to-use ideas.

Key points to be covered:

  • What to say when it matters most: real-time teacher moves in moments of tension.
  • Working with, not around, PARSNIP topics in diverse classrooms.
  • Teaching language for conflict: disagreement, boundaries, repair, and pause.
  • Designing materials that hold both safety and critical engagement.
  • Extending the moment: how to sustain learning without escalation.
