Using Storytelling in Literature for English Learner Education

What are some effective strategies for integrating culturally relevant stories into multi-lingual-learner curricula while promoting inclusivity? How can the study of literary texts enhance vocabulary development for these learners? How can technology be used to facilitate storytelling as an effective language learning strategy?

We will explore the transformative power of storytelling to enhance language acquisition. We will explore effective strategies for selecting appropriate, authentic texts that help improve language skills, foster cultural understanding and student engagement. Participants will explore effective uses of literary texts to develop reading, writing, speaking skills, creativity and critical thinking.

Key points to be covered are to:

• understand the role of storytelling in enhancing language acquisitions and comprehension,
• identify culturally relevant texts and implement effective strategies to integrate literary texts into lessons to foster student engagement,
• provide rich linguistic input with literary text as a source of authentic thought articulation by exposing students to a variety of grammatical structures and vocabulary, and
• foster language awareness by exposure to literary language to empower students in the use of creative and expressive ways to articulate thought and emotion

About the Presenter

Alice (she/her) is a professor in Mohawk College’s department of Communication and Liberal Studies. She holds a Master of Arts degree from McMaster University in Canadian Literature. She is a TESOL member, an IDI qualified administrator, and a Fulbright teacher exchange alumna. She has been teaching ESL, EFL, and academic English in Romanian, American, and Canadian high-schools as well as at Mohawk College.
